Another summertime cinema

This space arises from the fundamental premise of looking at the latest trends and discourses found in Spanish cinema, cinema of high-quality, where special attention is paid to the cinematographic fact. The filmmakers invited to participate in this program cannot conceive of their activity without posting essential questions regarding the point of departure: What should we tell? What language should we use to tell it? And, perhaps even more pressing, where should we tell it from?

Every Wednesday and Friday, the series Another summertime cinema offers viewers the chance to get to know a sample of the best of Spain's recent cinema, complemented by a colloquium between filmmakers and audiences in the cloister of the Sabatini Building, thus making the Museum a meeting place once again. This first year the series brings together eight feature films which have stood out from the rest at festivals and film events that focus on independent film, which is just another way to say film made beyond the margins of the production framework of an industry concerned primarily with highly predictable proposals.

And the word margins is not gratuitous in this context. For some years now, there has been debate regarding the pertinence of a series of concepts when discussing a certain type of Spanish cinema: periphery, margins, boundaries. And this is when no direct mention is made of the reviled and thorny notion of auteur cinema. One thing is true: all the filmmakers represented here assume, more or less explicitly, their condition as audiovisual snipers, in that they do not desist, not the slightest, from bringing to life their projects even knowing they will not easily find a spot in the system; and even less will they attract the attention of the mass media.

Eight features that reveal a wide range of genres, tones and grammars, demonstrating, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that the vitality of Spanish cinema is firmly anchored in a permanent search for the other, as the title of the series clearly indicates.
