Vasco Araújo. The Girl of the Golden West, 2004

Araújo’s work focuses on the world of divas and the opera as a system for staging personal and social dramas. His works (in which for the most part Araújo himself acts) represent the frivolity, dreams and daily life of divas at the same time that they articulate a dramatic reflection on the theatre of vanities that is our existence. In some of his videos, the absence of a voice and silence are established as powerful mechanisms that symbolise the inner drama.

Araújo is one of the most influential Portuguese artists on the international scene in recent years. He has had one-man shows in museums and galleries such as Art Cologne (Cologne), the Fundação Serralves (Oporto), the Galerie Gabrielle Maubrie (Paris) and the Conduit Gallery (Dallas).
