Everything Flows: Spanish Computer Graphics
In Spain, as abroad, traditional artists working in painting and sculpture were the first to envision the usefulness of computers as creative tools, long before computer graphics reached the world of communication and the visual arts. During the 1980s, the first computer graphics companies began to encourage computer-based art investigation. However, before any continuity could be reached in this field, many artists coming from painting and sculpture like Jesús Camino, Miguel Ángel Peña and Luis Canicio had to completely rethink their work. Disconnected as they were from the world of galleries and museums, they found an exhibition space in a parallel area, creating what are called bumpers, headers or spots, not for the art market, but for the field of communications. Both specialties are governed by a complex labyrinth of different criteria and objectives, but it is legitimate to ask to what point these divisions can be maintained, given that the concepts of art and communication were seen as a fully-integrated social practices until at least the 18th century.
This audiovisual programme does not only show the application of new technologies to works of art, but also engages with the new aesthetic, formal and conceptual ideas being articulated in the computer and telecommunications age. As works created within a temporal paradigm, they are volatile and ephemeral, evoking an irremediable transformation of perception and indicating the change in our aesthetic categories as they confront pre-established quality criteria. These are the products of the electronic age and the computerisation of all social practices at the zenith of science and technology, whence they question traditional values of objectivity, truth and likeness.
