Maja Bajevic

In this performance piece, Maja Bajevic uses gestures and situations to look at how ideology operates. A group of workers dirty the Palace’s large picture windows, writing political slogans on them that remain behind, a smudged trace, until the next act. With this constant process of writing-erasure-writing in a collective space, Bajevic takes a poetic approach to the usual mechanisms of propaganda.

In one corner of the Palace, a scaffold has been set up to provide access to the picture windows. A group of five people dirty the windows, covering them with dust instead of cleaning them. They write slogans on the dirty surfaces, which, after writing, they clean, to then begin again. The scaffold and the slogans scribbled on the windows – which are left half-cleaned at the end of each session – remain in the room like artefacts providing proof of the performance.

The performance goes on for four hours a day, for two five-day periods. The tools used are also left on view to the public during the exhibition. The assembly and disassembly of the scaffold, which is always done in a different place in the Palace, forms part of the performance.

On performance days, what appears to be an opera singer reinterprets the slogans from the top of the monument.
