Intervals is the Museo Reina Sofía’s regular programme premiering recent film work, made up of critically acclaimed films from the year in progress or the previous one. This fresh edition is devoted to Clorindo Testa (2023), the latest film by Argentinean film-maker Mariano Llinás (Buenos Aires, 1975), who will present his work over two sessions, holding a talk with the audience in the first.
Mariano Llinás, one of the most original and salient figures in recent cinema, returns after his epic La flor (The Flower, 2018) with a metafictional piece on family, memory and art history. The film explores the process of producing a biographical documentary around the figure of the illustrious architect Clorindo Testa (1923–2013), a friend of the film-maker’s father, the poet and art critic Julio Llinás. In between, akin to a frenetic detective story, suspense, politics, autobiography and, above all, humour convene in what is also an underlying reflection on what film is and what are, if they are actually of use, the narrations the director puts forward.
Are we or are we not watching a film on the Argentinean architect Clorindo Testa? if not, what is it about? Is it about the director’s life, his father’s life, his country’s life? Or is it one of those biographical films in which the narrator tells family stories as he pulls old photos out of a box? These and other possibilities steer this adventure, the subtitle of which, according to Llinás quoting Xavier de Maistre, could be a “voyage autour de mon père”, a journey around my father.
