Intervals is the Museo Reina Sofía’s regular programme premiering recent film work, made up of critically acclaimed films from the year in progress or the previous one. This next edition is devoted to Reas (2024), a feature-length film made by writer and theatre and film director Lola Arias (Buenos Aires, 1976) on identities, desires and fictions.

Reas, one of the most original films of 2024, is a musical documentary with a group of convicts playing their own lives. In this instance, the film is screened in two sessions that include a presentation and talk by the director.

Yoseli has a tattoo of the Eiffel Tower on her back and was arrested at Ezeiza Airport for drug smuggling; Nacho is a young trans man who was arrested for fraud and has set up a rock band in prison. Although both entered the same women’s prison, they would not meet until the shooting of this film. Reas is a musical documentary featuring people deprived of their freedom as the empty prison of Caseros, Buenos Aires, becomes the stage for a musical recreation, where song, dance and performance allow the protagonists to relive a past life and imagine their future.

Lola Arias is one of the stage directors to more frequently explore the limits between fiction and reality, and how from fiction pathways can be opened to address the real. She has directed over twenty theatre productions, including Mi vida después (My Life After), Atlas des kommunismus and Campo minado (Minefield), while her first feature film, Teatro de guerra (Theatre of War, 2018), starring fighters in the Falklands War, won the Ecumenical Jury Award in the Forum section of Berlinale and the Best Director Prize in Argentinian Competition at BAFICI. Reas is her second film.
