In Loie Fuller: Research, choreographer Ola Maciejewska critically appropriates the “dancer’s dress” invented by Loie Fuller (Illinois, 1862–Paris, 1928), one of the most innovative and widely recognised dance artists in modernism.

Loie Fuller: Research plays with the organisation of constantly transforming states and forms through a series of exercises which unfold before the audience, relating sculpture (the dress) with the person who sculpts it. Rather than seeking to strengthen the physical relationship with things, it looks to facilitate forms which make this relationship visible; a corporal practice to stimulate the movement of subject matter received by the form, a movement that emerges from the relationship between the human body and the object: the “dancer’s dress”.

The performance at 6pm will be followed by a conversation with the artist in the Sabatini Auditorium, thus bringing the audience in attendance closer to the research conducted by Maciejewska.

Polish-born Ola Maciejewska is a choreographer who lives in Paris. In 2012, she gained an MA in Contemporary Theatre and Dance from the University of Utrecht. In addition to a number of academic explorations, Maciejewska has performed Loie Fuller: Research (2011) in France — at the Lyon Biennale in the autumn of 2017 — Switzerland, Canada, Poland, the Netherlands and Portugal, and the piece Bombyx Mory (2015) — which premiered at the La Menagerie de Verre in Paris, in the Les Inaccoutumés Festival — in spaces and contexts such as Kaaitheatre, in Brussels, Porto’s Museu Serralvo, ImPulsTanz, in Vienna, and Mercat de les Flors, in Barcelona, to name but a few. From 2016 to 2018 Maciejewska has been an associate artist of the centre chorégraphique national de Caen en Normandie (France). Her new work, DANCE CONCERT, recently premiered at the National Taichung Theater in Taiwan and in the autumn of 2018 it was performed at the Centre Pompidou, Paris, in the Autumn Festival.
