As a consequence of political events led by the extreme right in Paris on the 6th of February 1934, André Masson and his future wife Rose Maklès moved to Spain, settling in Tossa de Mar in June. They became deeply involved in Spanish culture and politics, travelling around different cities, and this would later be reflected in the artist’s works. Specifically, during his years in Spain Masson supported the Republican government’s projects in educational reform, land redistribution and the improvement of working conditions for rural workers.
Masson returned to France in 1936, and remained outside Spanish territory for the duration of the Civil War. However, he continued his involvement in the tragic events devastating Spain at the time. Clear evidence of this is his watercolour Massacre de paysans espagnols (Massacre of Spanish Peasants), with its war-related theme.
