Social Poetry

Social poetry is a literary genre from post-war Spain aimed at the public at large and defined by its social commitment. Customary themes are the Spanish Civil War, repression, political struggle, the idea of Spain and the internationalisation of poetry.
From the outset, social poetry was conditioned by censorship, for which methods were created to express critique through ambiguity, albeit using simple language, to easily reach the reader. Salient were the poets Blas de Otero, Ángel González, Gabriel Celaya and Miguel Hernández, reference points for Estampa Popular artists, who included their poems in a number of works.

Poesía de España (Poetry from Spain)

The publication of the magazine Poesía de España, founded by Ángel Crespo and Gabino-Alejandro Carriedo, began in 1960. Its aim was to provide an outlet for the cultural and political concerns of its founders and, to this end, disseminate quality social poetry. The magazine’s illustrations were commissioned to a different artist in each issue, with some of the publication’s illustrators founders of Estampa Popular such as Zarco, Pascual Palacios Tardez, Ricardo Zamorano, Antonio Valdivieso and Francisco Todó.
