Lanzarote. Miquel Barceló en las colecciones del Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía

Barceló's work is influenced by art movements such as Art Brut, Action Painting and Informalism at its most material, in addition to important figures from universal painting in terms of themes, technique and the use of colour.

Berceló's work has been displayed previously in the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía on a number of occasions, for instance in the exhibitions: Artistas españoles. Obras de los años 80 y 90 en las Colecciones del museo (Spanish Artists. Works from the 80s and 90s in the Museo's Collections) in 1994 and Dibujos germinales. 50 artistas españoles. 1947-1998 (Germinal Drawings. 50 Spanish Artists 1947-1998) from 1998. Moreover, in 1999 there is the individual exhibition in the Museo Reina Sofía entitled Miquel Barceló. Obra sobre papel. 1979-1999 (Miquel Barceló. Work on Paper. 1979-1999), and then in 2001 his work is presented in the collective exhibition De Picasso a Barceló. Colección del Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía / Siglo XX (From Picasso to Barceló. The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía Collection / 20^th Century), inaugurated in the National Museum of Fine Arts (MNBA) in Buenos Aires and then subsequently forming part of the itnerary in the Pinacoteca in São Paulo.

On this occasion the Gemeente Museum in The Hague welcomes the exhibition as a donation by the artist of sixty-two engravings to the Museo, which currently make up the series Lanzarote. These works, edited and printed by the Línea Gallery, are produced during August 1999 and October 2000 on the island in the Canary archipelago.

Of the total donation, a representative selection of works have been chosen from the series, the most sizeable graphic art project Barceló has realised to date. It also includes sub-series, bullfighting and pornography. Additionally there are six seascapes and three self-portraits, including one in which the artist can be seen as Pinocchio, which form the beginning of the series. This exhibition is a chance to appreciate the command of engraving techniques of one of the most international artists from the Spanish art scene.
