Under the title Questions of Perception, the Palacio de Velázquez is hosting the first monographic exhibition in Spain on the Swiss artist Rémy Zaugg (Courgenay, 1943 – Basle, 2005). The show includes a selection of paintings and work on paper, with the accent placed on the exploration of language and perception as a means of activating the viewer. Keys to apprehending the full dimension of Zaugg's work include his fascination with the materialization of language and its phenomenological implications, his interest in architecture and town planning, and his practical and theoretical reflections on the presentation of the artwork.
The exhibition draws special attention to the tautological character of Zaugg's work, visible, for example, in his first works inspired by Cézanne or his investigations of perspective in the seventies. It meanwhile also proposes a conceptual and physical experience reinforced by the use of color and typography, and by the repetition of an unfettered flow of messages.
