Atlas

How to Carry the World on One's Back?

The mythical figure of Atlas titles the series of cartographies assembled in one volume, a book of images which seeks to systematically, problematically and poetically offer our eyes myriad things gathered by elective affinities. In the sphere of the visual arts, the Mnemosyne Atlas, made by Aby Warburg between 1924 and 1929, constitutes for all art historians a landmark work that transformed our way of understanding images. The catalogue, with the imprint of Georges Didi-Huberman throughout, reflects the exhibition which, with Warburg and his mobile panels as genius loci, surveys works and artists who, from the First World War to the present day, have devoted themselves to the impetus of the archive.
