Specters of Artaud
This exhibition catalogue explores how Antonin Artaud’s desire to transcend the limits of language — spoken and written — endured in the work of a string of artists associated with avant-garde movements in the mid-twentieth century. It includes around three hundred works by creators from key countries — France, the USA and Brazil — and points to the process of appropriation, recontextualisation and translation in Artaud’s multi-faceted legacy being part of a broader intellectual history that cannot be separated from the emergence, on both sides of the Atlantic, of an ensemble of multidisciplinary artistic practices that considered the need to develop alternative models of modernity.
